roti bakar @ campbell st

We’re been wanting to come eat here for so long now. Many a times something came up and we always cancelled. So we made it a point to finally eat here and see what the fuss was about. Note: even though I’m an island son, this is the 1st time I’ve eaten here.. malu laah I know… We got there around 830am and obviously you cant park on campbell st since its so congested. its a miracle if you can even find a parking slot here. the "shop" was 90% packed and we managed to grab a table in front of the bread toaster... which was next to the "egg station"... which was next to the "drink station"... The atmosphere just seemed very stressful. and i pity the "bread toaster" as he had to squat in front of the charcoal fire to toast the bread. really not ergo.. :-D we ordered kopi peng but got kopi-o-peng instead... :-P anyhow, it was pretty good kopi-o-peng so i didn't really complain. while waiting for the bread set to arrive, we had some nasi lemak.. so-so only.. the bread finally came after 10minutes. The bread was lightly toasted over charcoal and spread with butter and kaya. I have to say its one of the BEST toast bread that I’ve ever had. the eggs finally came as well, 5minutes after we finished the excellent bread. eggs as usual, eaten with standard soy sauce and pepper. eggs were nicely done. not too runny and not too hard. they actually use the yellow egg maker that most people have in their homes.

Their timing seem to be off that day. The 2 bread sets came before the eggs came. So we actually finished all the bread before eating the eggs. i didn't really like that because i normally like to dip the bread into the eggs. elpea was already looking at ways to cut the waste and "lean" the processes... seriously, i kid you not...!!!!

Ambiance: Don't get me wrong, I’m a veteran at eating in sidelanes and I love the food here but the atmosphere just seems very tense. maybe it was just a bad day for them..

Would I go back again: Definitely. the roti is good laah.

Overall: 4/5

like u..i also went to check out and see what the fuss was all about some time back...not a good experience...i guess it was a 'tense' day as well (seems like everyday is a tense day eh?)... AND the killer - totally unhygienic!! i'm as malaysian as anyone else and can definitely eat at those road side stalls - but this time really beh tahan. it was raining earlier (i think), anyway..there were puddles of water on the floor & as you mentioned, the 'toaster' had to squat to toast the bread (using bare hands -no gloves), ppl were tromping around here & there (since the drinks station and the sink was all in the same small area) - i didn't even want to think about what's splashing onto the toasts! urrghh... -kl
