roti boy @ 1 avenue

Roti boy is renowned for its Mexican buns but it has since also expanded into “bakery/deli” style food.

The Mexican bun still taste as good as I remember when i 1st tasted it in KL years ago.

But, size wise, the branch here serve a much shrunken version of the bun.

A very, very, very much shrunken version.

We bought some buns, tarts etc.

Practically all of them were horrendous.

Back to basic

Someone told me that SCS butter is good for baking butter cake. That is one of the expensive butter around RM8 per block. Bought a few weeks back and wasn't sure to use for cake or cookies.
Ry was doing his schoolwork as usual (never seems to end...sigh) & I had 30 mins to spare with Don running in the hall, I decided to bake a marble cake.
I am not a fan of butter cake or marble cake as I felt they lack flavors. Anyway, this turned out okay - very soft & quite moist. The only complain I have is that it is a bit crumbly. Ry gave me his thumb's up sign and this means 1 happy customer. 2 to go.

CNY Lunch with colls

Every year without fail we will have CNY lunch together. This year it is at Fishermen's Wharf. The must have is yee sang for us to lou sang and shark's fin soup.
 Yee Sang
 Yee Sang 'after'.
My fav - Shark's fin soup.

 Pork ribs.
 Mixed vege.
 Fish cooked in tomyam.
 Sweet & sour prawns.
 Fried rice in lotus leaves.

Rating is 7/10. We are Penangites... so by default we love to eat : )

tim sum @ tai tong

Tai tong is one of the more famous dim sum houses in Penang.

It’s quite an established restaurant and I’ve heard abt it years before but I wonder why we never found the time to go there to eat.

Maybe because its right smack in the middle of town in Cintra St.

We were there early in the morning and managed to find parking in one of the adjacent streets.

The shop was not very packed and we managed to get a table. Luckily.

We ate the usual tim sum fare; the siew-mai’s, pau’s, egg tarts and loh-mai-kai’s.

I would rate the dim sum here above average if compared to the ones I’ve eaten in the bayan lepas area. ( Uugh..!! )

The Food here was fresh, hot and taste good.

Overall, Service was good and the food was good as well.

Will definitely go back there.

Next time…

Pork curry with mantou

Steamed stuffed pork mussel

Crispy noodles

Char hor fun

Oyster omelette

cny 2011 eve dinner

This year we decided “no more steamboat” for cny eve dinner.

So it’s back to basics with rice and dishes then.

We split the load and came out with 4 dishes to cook and 1 which we bought.

·         Soup with pork spare parts

·         Stir fry lettuce with shitake mushrooms

·         Stir fry honey soy chicken

·         Sweet and sour fish

·         Pork pot roast

I think we did much better this time as we finished most of the food and no leftovers.

It would have been a leftover nightmare if we did steamboat, which was what happened last year.

THE TREE MONKEY@ TROPICAL SPICE GARDEN

We got treated to a team lunch at this place inside the teluk bahang tropical spice garden.

The tree monkey.

The environment we ate in was basically on top of the hill surrounded by trees. It was a bit warm and humid though.

It was like eating in a park.

Foodwise:

Rice set (only so-so)

A bowl of delicious green curry (very delicious)

A bowl of tomyam (only so-so)

Would I go back there again ? eeer….

not mee rebus

This was not what I ordered.

We were doing our chinese new year marketing at sunshine and I wanted to get mee rebus with the thick sauce.

I noticed this stall along the b.b. economy rice row and I thought “why not?”

I shud have avoided it immediately when I saw the picture of “fried rice” with the label of “fried noodles”.

Lesson learnt.

Oh yea, food wise, the noodles were only so-so and the prawns looked huge but were overcooked.

sweets for my sweet

During our valentine’s day grocery run, we got stuff for the lovely olio dinner and also these sweet sensations as well.

Nestle cremeria chocolate obsession

This is our all time super favourite. Super Chocolately and every mouthful is packed with choc bits as well.

Smooth texture and its better then the wall’s chocolate.

Overall:

I like.

Elpea like.

Starbucks java chip frappuccino

I’m as amazed as anyone else that starbucks has an ice cream line.

I found the icecream to have a real unique taste.

Its basically like eating coffee which is cool to me as it has a slight bitter aftertaste but elpea did not like it at all.

Next time we’ll grab the “hot chocolate” flavor.

Overall:

I like.

Elpea no like.

As always chocolate wins the day.

Toast français à la maison

French toast, home made.
the easiest of comfort foods.
sliced bread, dipped in egg and slowly pan-fried and eaten with honey.
there were a few slices made from a small loaf "mee-koo" kuih somemore..

this always evokes a nice childhood memory of mum making this for weekend breakfast
and us eating it, dipping the toast into sugar.

Best swiss roll

I have been craving for JJ's Swiss roll since October last year. The shop is in Ipoh - 2 hrs drive away.

When d gals planned for a dim sum breakfast at Ipoh... I was thrilled... thinking of Swiss roll ; )

It is worth every RM. I wish they have one in Penang.

The texture is soft & moist and most importantly not too sweet. They have many varieties. Bought 5 boxes and got 1 box free. Gave away 4 boxes. Going to try durian, blueberry & green tea next time.

Swiss roll  breakfast today. Boys love d choc & vanilla. Choc & pandan for me. E likes choc.

Collagen Drinks

I guess I am outdated. Few months back I saw a lady  took boxes of this (pic above) at the pharmacy and was told by the sales person that 'this' is the drink that makes women beautiful. i was like .... huh? i know what collagen does...i know eating tomato & spinach helps to replenish the collagen that is lost in our body BUT...collagen drinks?

during my recent CNY reunion i got introduced to colla-plus (collagen drink)... this is just one of the many brands available in the market. Another friend is consuming Taut®.

i am still contemplating....... hmmmmm.

btw, the synonym to eat is consume. and this drink is to be consumed, it qualifies to be posted here :p

nasi lemak @subaidah

This is another one i don't get. We paid $7 for the rice with chicken, cucumber and egg.
The thing is that its absolutely forgettable.
The $1 nasi lemak from the market makes a better impact.

This stall opens only at 930pm+ and is packed.

My theory is that at around the 10pm timeframe, there is no other place that sells the same thing as this.
So they are guaranteed to make a killing no matter what the food taste like.
Well, to each his own..

I'm not even going to rate this.
Suffice to say, i don't think we'll be back here though, unless its at 10pm.

having a cuppa..

Pitstop to recharge our depleted energies.

Ultimate mocha ice blended, and latte for us.
hot chocolate and tuna puff for the boys.
Oh, i also took the choc fudge cake, no photo though as it got attacked fast.

Note to self: do not reheat the choc fudge cake. Spoils it.

Kerabu Bihun

Muffins

Khai Loong's mum made these for d boys. So thoughtful of her. They love her muffins. This time it is blueberry.
Her baking skills are excellent. Her cakes always rise well.
I dont have her consistency. Well guess I still have a long way to go. Her pineapple tarts n cookies are superb too. E's boss was asking d other day if she is selling this year : )

Inspired

i used to have this when i was a kid. my aunts cooked yummy/delicious nyonya dishes. going to ask my mum if she remembers any of the recipe (did my aunts pass down to her)?

Reunion @ mum's place in Prai

my mum makes better steamboat then me. her soup is always sweet and tasty. we had reunion steamboat 2 weeks before CNY as my elder sis & fly got to go back to Kampar for CNY - my bro in law is from Kampar. so we gathered everyone...bro & fly, sis & fly, Khai Loong's fly, Jeri & us - 18 people all together - 2 tables. we will have steamboat tomorrow (2nd day of CNY) when we go home to 'pai jia' (visit). i am keeping my fingers cross that it is not steamboat .... if that happens... i will go buy toto.

poh piah @ tmn kristal

This is an instance where too many cooks don't necessary spoil the broth.
Prep work done by sis (easy part),
Joo hoo char cooked by the aunts,
And all put together by my dear masterchef elpea.

Cookies oh cookies

@ e's ah kor's house. All sorts. Peanut, pineapple tarts, kuih kapit, ribbons, ngaku, loyang, peas & more. Lazy to type di : )
